The Wasteland

In the movie The Wasteland, this documentary follows an artist Viki Muniz on his trip to one of the largest landfills in the world in Rio. Viki Muniz incorporates everyday objects into his photographic process such as dirt, sugar, wire, etc. Muniz wants to be able to change people's lives and introduce them into a whole new world. When the idea of going to the landfill in Rio came across to him, he said "everybody there is drug addicts".  But  by the end of the documentary he saw that he completely changed peoples lives and he looked at the landfill in Rio in a different perspective. When he got to the landfill the quote that was said was "Trash from the millionaires mansion mixes in with the poors trash" There is no class structure in the landfill. At this landfill he meets a handful amount of new people and he interviews and talks to them. Each one of them talk about being a picker in the landfill. They talk about it such a positive way with a lot of pride behind what they do. One of the pickers goes by the name of Isis, she doesn't like being a picker in the landfill and she said she feels disgusting. Isis has children and she is separated from the father and she doesn't get to see her children. She was one of the helpers that Viki has picked to help him on a special project and all the proceeds from that project was going to the community in Rio. By theend of the documentary Isis seemed to moved and touch with the artwork that she had helped out Viki with. She then wanted to changed her life for the better and the artwork inspired her to do more.  All of the people that helped out Viki with the artwork were all so touched and moved and it inspired them to do better for themselves.

Art 21 - Kiki Smith

Kiki Smith growing up and going to school she says it was very difficult for her to read. So she rely on her sight to help her learn things. Smith likes for her artwork to have a meaning behind it. She says in the interview "Basically, I think art is just a way to think, it's like standing in the wind and letting it pull you in whatever drection it wants to go.." So she has her own storytelling behnd her pieces of art. However she wants for other people who look at her art work, for it to tell a meaning and a story to them too. She thinks art as if something that is inside of you and when you create your artwork you are bringing what is on your inside to the physical world. That art work is a representation of your spirit.

MoMa Museum Visit

Two modern art styles that was shown in the MoMa was Pop Art and Abstract Expressionism. Pop Art came about Post war. Pop art was representational Art , and artist would just paint things how they see it. Pop Art started in the United States in the mid 1900's. Pop Art was a way that artist were putting a twist on fine art. Pop Art had more everyday objects in the art work such as cans, newspaper, etc. Two of the famous artworks that were pop art was done by Andy Warhol and those are the Campbell soup and the Marilyn Monroe.
Abstract expressionism is also know as action painting. In most abstract paintings you can imagine how the artist did the painting. You can imagine the physical actions that the artist was doing to get all sorts of lines in the painting. For example there was a painting that was done by Jackson Pollock and it had all sorts of lines of different colors and that was the whole painting. He did what he called a “drip” technique and it was when he was throwing paint onto the canvas using all different sorts of actions with his arms.

Alfred Stieglitz Photography

Alfred Stieglitz was very much well know for his photography in the 20th century. Stieglitz wanted to get recognition for his pictures but putting the same effects that was in fine art in his pictures. He was very fascinated by the rise of American Power. It is safe to say that the American Industry was his inspiration for his photos. One of his well known photos is cold  Winter, Fifth Avenue which was taken in 1892. For this one picture he waited for 3 ours in a snowstorm on fifth avenue for the perfect picture. He seems like he was a perfectionist when it came to his photography. He definitely used what was going on around that time period for his inspiration for his pictures.
